Guitar Lessons in Boulder

Derek Van Scoten earned his Bachelor's of Music with high honors in Classical and Jazz Guitar Performance from CU Boulder. He has been teaching guitar and mandolin since 1997.
Derek toured nationally with Latin Big Band Cabaret Diosa and jazz/funk groups 8traC and the Motet. Highlights include performances at Red Rocks, Great American Music Hall in San Francisco, Live Oak Festival in Santa Barbara, and a New Years Party with Jerry Seinfield.

New England native, musician/songwriter, Matt Flaherty has been playing guitar since 1994. He holds a bachelors of music degree with a concentration on jazz guitar, from Western Connecticut State University, a nationally accredited music school. He has studied with some of New York City's finest musicians such as Chris Morrison, and Jamie Begian.
Matt has toured with soul/funk band, The Evolved, playing at venues such as The Lion's Den (NYC), Toad's Place (CT), Sugarloaf Ski Resort (Maine), Mount Snow Ski Resort (VT), and Sunday River Ski Resort (ME). He has played with several well known acts such as Dave Grippo (Phish, Trey Anastasio Band), Russ Lawton (Trey Anastasio Band ), Vinny Idol (producer of hip hop super group D-Block), Jen Durkin (The Bomb Squad, Deep Banana Blackout ), and Mystic Bowie (Tuff Gong International recording artist).

Adam Buer began playing guitar and trumpet in middle school and eventually developed a love for a variety of music. In high school he joined a versatile rock band, hendr 9, that performed in numerous venues during their four years together in Montana. Later, he attended the University of Idaho where he received a bachelor’s degree in music education and studied classical guitar with James Reid. While in Idaho he played guitar and various other instruments in classical, jazz, and rock ensembles. During his music education studies he also taught private lessons, led a church praise band, and assisted with group music classes. Adam has won prizes in a number of solo guitar competitions including those at the 2005 Northwest Guitar Festival, 2005 Music Fest Northwest, and the 2004 Idaho Federation of Music Clubs. In master class situations, Adam has studied with Christopher Parkening, Alieksy Vianna, John Sutherland, Dale Ketcheson, Paul Grove, Luis Millan, and Michael Videon. He has performed with the Symphony Orchestras of Walla Walla and Spokane as well as the Boulder Guitar Orchestra.

Karen Hogg graduated from Boston's Berklee College of Music in 1995. After graduation, she moved to New York City, where she taught and played in several country and rock bands around the area.
A highly published writer, Karen is the author of two instructional books, Women in Rock and Guitar Made Easy. Her articles have appeared in Acoustic Guitar Magazine, Play Guitar!, Guitar Teacher, Fretboard Journal, and All About Jazz New York.
