Woodwinds Workshop

Class description:  The woodwind workshop will provide tricks and tips on everything from instruments and equipment to performing and listening.  It's an opportunity to learn all those little pearls of wisdom that normally come from years and years of playing.

Education
Mr. Gersten received his Bachelors Degree in music education from the University of Kansas where he studied clarinet with Larry Maxey, his Master's Degree in Clarinet studying with Stephanie Zelnick, and is currently working on a Doctorate in Clarinet studying with Bil Jackson at the University of Northern Colorado.

Achievements/Scholarships
Mr. Gersten has performed across China and at prestigious events such as the 2004 MENC national conference in Minneapolis and worked with such talented individuals as Michael Wayne, Bil Jackson, and Tony-award winning composer Mark Hollmann. His playing can be heard
on the albums Redline Tango and Wild Nights both released on the Naxos label.

Highlights/Performances
Keeping an active performance schedule, Mr. Gersten currently plays clarinet with several groups including the Helianthus Contemporary Music Ensemble, The Lawrence Quartet, and the Ottawa Symphony. He also frequently works as a pit orchestra musician around the Kansas City area.

Philosophy
Music should always be fun. Students should understand what they are playing but also why they are learning it. The goal is to teach students how to teach themselves.
