Taylor Smith
“Life is about rhythm. We vibrate, our hearts are pumping blood, we are a rhythm machine, that’s what we are. ”
About Taylor
After high school, Taylor pursued a Bachelor’s Degree in Contemporary Musicianship from Middle Georgia State University, studying under Miguel Castro. During this time, Taylor was teaching full-time as a middle school and high school percussion director, was playing in a few local bands, and recording himself and others in the studio he and his friend built inside a storage unit.
Taylor moved to Fort Collins in 2022 to pursue his Master’s Degree in Percussion Performance at Colorado State University, graduating in the Spring of 2024. He currently resides in Fort Collins and performs and teaches lessons all around the Northern Colorado area.

Taylor’s Instructional Approach
My approach to teaching is having students develop a good ear for learning and actively listening to themselves. It is also important for drummers to understand how their muscles affect their control over the sticks.
Practice Tips
When it comes to percussion practice, consistency beats intensity. You don’t need hours a day, just 15–30 focused minutes can go a long way. Break things down: isolate tricky rhythms, work with a metronome, and don’t rush the tempo. Hands get better with repetition, not speed. And mix it up! Whether it’s snare, mallets, or drum set, variety keeps things fun and your skills sharp.
