If you have spent much time in Boulder, chances are you have experienced something Stephen Oskay helped put together. From Bands on the Bricks and music festivals to arts and cultural events, Stephen’s work happens behind the scenes. From coordinating musicians, performers, vendors, and businesses, Stephen plays a large role in making downtown Boulder the lively cultural hub we all love.

In this Community Spotlight, Stephen talks with Gary Gutierrez of The Lesson Studio about what goes into creating Downtown Boulder’s events, his role in running Bands on the Bricks, the importance of supporting local musicians, and what he hopes people will see coming to downtown Boulder in the years ahead.

Q & A with Stephen Oskay1

Gary: For anyone who’s unfamiliar with everything Downtown Boulder does, can you give us a sense of the scope of it?

Stephen: Downtown Boulder Partnership serves a couple of functions in the community. There’s the Business Improvement District, so that’s the downtown commercial district, essentially around Pearl Street and the surrounding areas.

The Business Improvement District helps maintain a clean and safe program, maintenance and making sure that the community is clean. That’s the main function of the business improvement district.

And then we have Downtown Boulder Community Initiatives, which is the arm that I work with a little bit more closely, and that’s community engagement. Trying to make inclusive events that engage the community through arts and culture.

Gary: You came to Downtown Boulder after working at the Fox Theatre. When did you officially get involved with Downtown Boulder?

Stephen: I started working for Downtown Boulder in March of 2022 after the pandemic. I came on originally as an event contractor with them, just kind of doing the operation side of stuff, and over time took on talent buying, became a staff member.

Currently, I’m the Event and Operations Manager for them, and I’ve still been growing with them over the years, just trying to take on as much as I can.

Gary: So what does a typical day look like for you?

Stephen: It really depends on whether we’re in the middle of an event or getting ready for an event. There’s a lot of just kind of communication and coordination between all the different
stakeholders.

Whether that’s our staff figuring out what serves the businesses down here, coordinating with the various operational vendors, the musicians that we book for our events, the performers, and,
outside of the kind of mundane day-to-day stuff, trying to think of unique ways that we can activate the downtown and experiences that we can give to people down here.

Gary: That seems like a lot of different pieces to keep moving at once.

Stephen: Yeah. There’s a lot that goes into it. You have the operational side, but then there’s also the creative side of thinking about what we can do next and how we can make the
experience better. A big part of it is figuring out how all those pieces work together. We’re working with businesses, vendors, artists, performers, and the community, and we’re trying to make something that works
for everybody.

Gary: What are some of the things coming up that you’re especially excited about?

Stephen: There’s a lot of things on the horizon for Boulder in general. We’re working with Tulagi Festival to help put that on at the end of August, which we’re very excited about. It’s going to be 20 different venues up and down the mall. We’re activating the bandshell. Lots of great national acts are going to be playing, and it’s kind of a unique format for Boulder, at least. We’re excited to kind of expand on the stuff that happened last year.

And then next year we’re really looking forward to the Pearl Street 50th anniversary.

Gary: What’s the plan for the 50th anniversary?

Stephen: The 50th anniversary is going to be a year-long celebration. The height of the programming will be kind of around late July, early August. It’s not one thing that we’re doing. Whether we’re doing our Snowflake Express rides, the Tebow train, the way we program bands, or what we bring to other downtown events, it’s going to be
something that people see throughout the year.

Gary: So people will see pieces of the celebration throughout a lot of the existing downtown programming?

Stephen: Yeah. Any events that we are having will be part of the celebration. Band on the Bricks, Pearl Street Arts Festival, other events that are downtown, like World Singing Day and things like that. They’ll all have this element incorporated into them.

As far as the actual celebration, those details are still to come.

Gary: Of all the events you’ve worked on, is there one that has become your favorite?

Stephen: I mean, I’m biased because Bands on the Bricks is my baby at this point. So Bands on the Bricks is my favorite event that I do. I really like booking the variety of music that we get, seeing the community come out and really kind of have fun and have a certain space that they can hang out at.

It’s a really fun kind of community party.

Gary: For someone who hasn’t been to Bands on the Bricks in a while, what can they expect besides the music?

Stephen: We have food vendors. It’s the kind of typical fare that you’ll find downtown on our evening night. We have Chiri’s Momos, Fast Eddie’s hot dogs, La Catrina Tamales, a delicious tamale cart down there. As far as drinks, I’m on the bar program for them as well, and we offer a wide variety of cocktails. This year we had some hard ginger beers, mules, margaritas, some non-alcoholic beer options, weekly beer sponsors. We try to offer the whole package.

Gary: And you really enjoy the music side of it?

Stephen: Yeah. I really like booking the variety of music that we get. That’s one of my favorite parts. And, it’s great seeing the community come out. That’s what makes it really rewarding. You get this variety of music, you get all these people coming downtown, and they really kind of have fun and have a certain space that they can hang out at.

Gary: You also work with a lot of local musicians. What role do these events play for artists?

Stephen: We have a ton of local artists involved. With Tulagi, for example, it’s a really great resource for local musicians to kind of get out there and network. There’s lots of great talent in there. That’s something I really enjoy about putting these events together. You get to bring in national acts, but you also have all this local talent and give people opportunities to get out there and be part of it.

Gary: What about people who want to get involved behind the scenes? Are there volunteer opportunities?

Stephen: Yeah, I really love you guys to point people to our volunteering opportunities. We’re always looking for more. If you go to boulderdowntown.com, you can check out our events and our volunteering opportunities. The website also has job openings and stuff like that. It’s a great resource for anybody. There’s a job board, there’s an events list, calendar, volunteer opportunities. So really anything Downtown Boulder, find the Boulder Downtown website.

Gary: What about a young person who’s really into music? Maybe a high school student who wants to get some experience around events and artists?

Stephen: I would say the arts festival would be a great fit for high school kids. They can help our artists, whether it’s booth sitting or helping them run water or things like that. There’s also networking. It’s cool.
And in the winter, we have our holiday events that we’re always looking for volunteers for, whether it’s the Lights of December parade or our Switch on the Holidays events. For the musical events, I do typically need volunteers for Bands on the Bricks, but they would have to have a parent there as alcohol is involved.

Gary: That’s a pretty great way for someone interested in music or events to see what actually happens behind the scenes.

Stephen: Yeah, definitely. There’s a lot that goes into these events that people don’t necessarily see. Getting involved is a good way to see how everything works and to meet people.

Gary: With everything you’ve got going on, what do you hope Downtown Boulder continues to be?

Stephen: I think it’s about continuing to find unique ways that we can activate the downtown and experiences that we can give to people down here. That’s really what I enjoy about the job. You have all the logistics and all the coordination, but at the end of the day, you’re trying to create something that people want to come to, participate in, and remember.

And I think that’s what makes it fun.

At the center of that growth is Mikaela Gregg, whose work as Superior’s Events & Volunteer Manager has helped turn the town into a destination for live music, family-friendly festivals, and community connection.

From free summer concerts and bustling markets to the beloved Chili & Beer Fest and Fourth of July celebration, Mikaela and her team are focused on creating experiences that bring people together. In this Community Spotlight, she sits down with Gary Gutierrez of The Lesson Studio to talk about Superior’s event growth, the town’s investment in music, and her vision for the future.

Q & A with Mikaela Gregg, Superior Parks, Recreation & Events

Gary: If I’m new to the Superior area, what are some of the events I absolutely need to know about?

Mikaela: We have an amazing events portfolio. We’ve gone from just a few handful of events a couple years ago to probably over 40, close to 50 events each year now. I think some of the best ones are our Summer Concert Series. We’re in our fourth year, and it’s become a great success. It’s family-friendly, we have food trucks, we have a beer garden, and we have great music. That one is growing every year. The talent of musicians, the level, the caliber, we’re taking it to new levels each year. We also have our Summer Market, which has been growing and expanding. It’s a farmers market event, and of course we bring music into that too. I think everything we do event-wise is always catered to be very family-friendly. That’s kind of the nature of this community. Everybody wants to be able to do everything together.

Gary: What are some of the longtime traditions that people should experience?

Mikaela: Our Fourth of July Festival is definitely one. I always joke that we try to fit as much into one day as possible. We start with a downhill mile race, which rolls into a parade, and then the parade rolls into a festival and free pancake breakfast. In years past we’ve added things like barbecues and after-parties. It’s been a town favorite for decades. I think we’re one of the very few small municipalities still running a parade, which is really fun. The community groups and neighborhoods come together and create these incredible floats. Every year there’s a different theme, so it’s always exciting to see what people come up with. And then there’s Chili & Beer Fest. This year is actually the 25th anniversary. That’s our biggest event. We usually pull in around 7,000 attendees. It started with community members making giant pots of chili for everyone to share. Over time it’s evolved into more of a food sampling festival. We have chili-inspired foods, beer vendors, multiple bands, entertainment, and activities throughout the day. It’s become one of our signature events.

Gary: One thing that really stood out to me when you showed me around Superior was how much the town has invested in event spaces. Can you tell us about some of those venues?

Mikaela: We have multiple facilities, both indoor and outdoor. We have our traditional Community Center on the east side of town, where a lot of our programming takes place and we hosted some of our smaller concerts there as well. Last year we opened our new Civic Space downtown, and that’s where we’ve shifted some of our larger events. It has a dedicated event space with great acoustics and a stage, so it works really well for concerts and community gatherings. Outside of that, we have the outdoor plaza adjacent to the Civic Space, which includes another stage, a park, and a large green space. Then just a block away we have our amphitheater, which is where our Summer Concert Series takes place. For a four-square-mile town, we really do have an incredible variety of event facilities.

Gary: It feels like Superior residents really love live music.

Mikaela: They do. The concerts are back at the amphitheater because people love the mountain views and the grassy space. And as downtown continues to grow, we’re seeing even more opportunities for entertainment. There’s a food hall and beer garden project coming in, and I originally worried that maybe we’d oversaturate things with concerts and events. But people keep wanting more. They ask for it, and we keep bringing it to them, and they keep showing up. That’s been really exciting to see.

Gary: You mentioned the Civic Space. How has your vision for that facility evolved?

Mikaela: I think we’re shifting away from it being primarily a live music venue and more toward a community gathering space. We’ve found it’s fantastic for conferences, private parties, corporate events, wedding receptions, and community programming. Our Cultural Arts Committee is running a monthly film series there as well. The space is wonderful for music, but it’s not quite large enough for some of the bigger acts we’d hoped to bring in. What we’ve discovered is that it’s incredibly valuable as a flexible community space, and that’s where we’re seeing the most demand right now.

Gary: How do you go about planning such a busy calendar?

Mikaela: We start with our staples. Fourth of July, Chili & Beer Fest, the Concert Series, and our markets are all established events at this point.
Then we listen to community feedback. For example, we’ve heard a lot of requests for more arts programming, so our Cultural Arts and Public Spaces Committee teamed up with our events department to launch a mural festival this fall. At this point, we’re pretty much maxed out. From May through September and even into October, almost every week is full. So now it’s about finding ways to add the things the community is asking for while still maintaining the events everyone already loves.

Gary: Is there anything coming up that you’re especially excited about?

Mikaela: Steely Dead is a big one. They’re playing our concert series, and I think it’s going to be amazing. In a lot of places people pay to see acts of that caliber, but we’re bringing them to Superior for free. I think that really shows the direction we’re taking the concert series and the level of talent we’re working to bring into town.

Gary: That’s something I’ve always admired about Superior. So many of these events are completely free.

Mikaela: They’ve always been community-focused. As long as I’ve been in this role, Town Council has been incredibly supportive of making these events accessible to everyone. Our festivals, our concerts, our community gatherings, they’re opportunities for people to come together. The Council continues to support increasing budgets where needed so we can keep offering these experiences to the community at little or no cost. They love these events just as much as the residents do.

Gary: Looking ahead, what’s your vision for Superior’s event scene?

Mikaela: My hope is to put us on the map – I want people to see Superior as a place to go for entertainment. I want our quality, our genres, and our overall delivery to be so exceptional that when people in Boulder, Broomfield, Westminster, or beyond are deciding what to do on a weekend, they think about stopping in Superior. We want bands to want to play here. We want the list of people wanting to provide entertainment here to be endless. We’ve built the quantity. Now it’s about continuing to elevate the quality and making these experiences the best they can possibly be.

For several decades, Rebecca Folsom has built a career rooted in songwriting, performance, and authentic musical expression. Known for her powerful voice and deeply resonant lyrics, Rebecca has toured extensively, released multiple albums, and created music that connects across genres and audiences. At the core of her work is a commitment to honest storytelling and creative exploration. In this Community Spotlight, Rebecca sits down with Gary Gutierrez of The Lesson Studio to share her journey as an artist, her songwriting process, and what continues to inspire her today.

Q and A with Rebecca Folsom

Gary: Rebecca, you have had such a rich career in music. What first drew you to songwriting?

Rebecca: Songwriting has always been a way for me to process and express what I am experiencing. It started very naturally. I was drawn to music early on, and writing songs became a way to make sense of things and connect with others. Over time, it just became part of who I am.

Gary: When you sit down to write, what does your process look like?

Rebecca: It usually starts with a feeling or a phrase. Sometimes it is a melody, sometimes it is a lyric. I try to stay open and let the song come through rather than forcing it. There is a balance between structure and intuition. I have learned to trust that process more over time.

Gary: Your music connects with people on a deep level. What do you think makes a song resonate?

Rebecca: Authenticity. People can feel when something is real. When you are writing from an honest place, it gives others permission to feel something too. That connection is what I value most about music.

Gary: You have performed in so many different settings. What do you enjoy most about performing live?

Rebecca: I love the connection with the audience. Every room is different, and every performance has its own energy. There is something really special about sharing a moment with people through music. It never gets old.

Gary: How has your approach to music evolved over the years?

Rebecca: I think I have become more trusting of myself. Earlier on, there was more pressure to figure things out or fit into certain expectations. Now I feel more grounded in my voice and what I want to say. That freedom has allowed me to create more honestly.

Gary: For aspiring songwriters, what advice would you give?

Rebecca: Keep writing. Stay curious and open. Do not worry about whether something is good or not in the beginning. The more you write, the more you learn your voice. And listen, really listen, to music that moves you.

Gary: What continues to inspire you today?

Rebecca: Life, people, experiences, nature, all of it. Inspiration is everywhere if you are paying attention. Music is just a way of translating that into something you can share.

Since opening its doors in 2018, Muse Performance Space in Lafayette, Colorado has become one of the most unique live music venues in Boulder County. Founded by professional musicians Pete Lewis and Clare Church, the space was built with a simple but powerful vision: create an intimate, acoustically rich environment where the focus is entirely on the music. In this Community Spotlight, Gary Gutierrez of The Lesson Studio talks with Pete about how Muse came to life, the artists who have shaped its stage, and why building community through music continues to drive everything they do.

Q and A with Pete Lewis of Muse Performance Space

Gary: Tell me a little bit about when the space opened and what inspired you to create it.

Pete: My wife Clare was playing a gig in New Mexico at a small venue, even smaller than the Muse, and that is where the seed was planted. She thought “I want to do something like this someday.” When we started thinking about retirement, we began looking for spaces that could bring that idea to life.

This location opened up, and we felt like it could work. Clare’s mom had sadly passed and left us some money, and we decided to invest all of it into building the space. We remodeled, bought a grand piano, built the stage, and just decided to go for it. We officially opened in late summer of 2018. Our first concert had one person in the audience, so we definitely had a moment of wondering what we had gotten ourselves into.

Gary: Was the original vision always to be a performance venue?

Pete: Yes, that was the main focus. We also originally planned to use the space during the day as a homeschool enrichment program, but our plans changed at the last minute. That forced us to rely more on concerts and eventually rentals, which became an unexpected but important part of the business.

Now, rentals make up about a quarter of the income. It was not the original plan, but it has helped sustain the space.

Gary: Can you share a bit about your musical backgrounds?

Pete: We are both professional musicians and have played with a wide variety of artists and ensembles. We have backed groups like The Temptations and The Four Tops, performed with orchestras like the Colorado Symphony and Philadelphia Orchestra, and played in jazz settings like the Playboy Jazz Festival.

We also spent many years as music educators in Boulder Valley schools. Teaching has always been a big part of our lives, and we have always brought that professional performance experience into the classroom.

Clare had to shift away from saxophone due to a condition that affected her embouchure, but she transitioned to drums and vocals and continues to be an incredible musician.

Gary: You have hosted some amazing artists. Who stands out?

Pete: There have been so many meaningful performances. Ron Miles was a very special one. We also hosted the Matsiko Children’s Choir from Liberia, which was an incredibly powerful experience.

Artists like Eddie Gomez, Hazel Miller, Ken Walker, René Marie, and Eric Gunnison have all played here. We have also had an all female mariachi group perform, which was incredible. It has been a mix of local, national, and international artists, all bringing something unique.

Gary: Where do you see Muse Performance Space heading in the future?

Pete: We want to continue being a place where creative music is the focus. The emphasis is on listening and enjoying the music, not on having to sustain through food and beverage sales. That was one of the motivations for starting the space. We wanted a venue where people come specifically for the music.

We hope to bring in more national artists while continuing to support local musicians. At the same time, we want to stay true to original and creative music. We do not focus on cover bands. There are other venues that do that well, and we wanted to fill a different niche.
Most importantly, we want to keep building the community. It has been growing steadily, and we have learned that it takes time.

Gary: What keeps you motivated to keep doing this?

Pete: It is really about building community. Bringing musicians and audiences together and creating shared experiences.

There are moments that remind you why you are doing it. When people leave and say that was an amazing experience, or when a performance is truly moving, it makes everything worth it.

We have hosted concerts that bring people together in meaningful ways, including fundraisers for musicians in need. That is what keeps us going, even with the challenges.

For more than two decades, Bridget Law has built a career as a performer, arranger, and recording artist. From fiddle contests and orchestras to touring stages and festival performances, music has always been central to her life. Today, however, her greatest creative fulfillment comes from the classroom. As the strings teacher at Shining Mountain Waldorf School, Bridget works with nearly one hundred students, guiding them through violin, viola, cello, and ensemble playing while nurturing their confidence, creativity, and love of music. In this Community Spotlight, Bridget reflects on her journey from student to performer to educator and shares why teaching now fuels her more than the stage ever did.

Q and A with Bridget

Gary: Let’s start at the beginning. Tell us about your own journey into music.

Bridget: I started playing violin when I was nine years old in third grade at a Waldorf school. I was completely infatuated with my teacher. She had such style and presence, and I just wanted to be around her energy. Her name was Chris Daring, and she was an outstanding fiddle player. I competed in fiddle contests as a private lesson student and played violin in the Waldorf orchestra. Over time, she became more than a teacher. She became like a second mother to me. That mentorship shaped everything.

Gary: You eventually went on to study music formally. What did that look like?

Bridget: I studied in the music industry program at University of Colorado Denver, which I still highly recommend for students considering a career in music. I played jazz, participated in every ensemble I could, and started exploring bluegrass and other genres. That led to years of performing, touring, and collaborating in different musical spaces. Music has always been my life.

Gary: And now you are teaching at a Waldorf school. How did that shift happen?

Bridget: I always joked that my dream job would be teaching strings at a Waldorf school. When the position opened, I applied. It took a couple tries, but eventually I got the job. Teaching here has been one of the most fulfilling chapters of my life. I still perform, but the classroom gives me a different kind of energy. I walk into rehearsal and feel alive. It feels like I am contributing to echoes into the future.

Gary: What was the program like when you arrived, and what have you changed?

Bridget: The previous teachers were exceptional and very classically trained. But many students who were not deeply committed to classical music were getting left behind. When I arrived, I began arranging music specifically for my students. I meet them where they are. If they love pop music, we bring that into the orchestra. If they are ready for classical repertoire, we build toward it. This year we are performing cello concertos and Coldplay in the same concert. It keeps them engaged and invested.

Gary: For readers unfamiliar with Waldorf education, can you give a brief overview?

Bridget: Shining Mountain Waldorf School is preschool through twelfth grade. Strings are built into the curriculum beginning in third grade. Every student chooses violin, viola, cello, or bass. In middle school, they can choose to continue strings or move to guitar. The philosophy emphasizes socio emotional development, collaboration, art, and whole human growth
alongside academics. Students still learn rigorous material, including advanced math and science, but they also develop empathy, creativity, and strong community connections.

Gary: You have spoken passionately about private lessons. Why are they so important?

Bridget: Private lessons should support what students are doing in school ensembles. Playing together is where the magic happens. We all remember the first time we felt that rush of performing in orchestra. Private teachers can reinforce those skills and help students feel confident in group settings. It is not about perfection. It is about helping them stay connected to
music as a community experience.

Gary: You have performed at major venues and festivals. Yet you light up most when you talk about teaching. Why?

Bridget: I am happy to do what I do. Performing is exciting and I still love it, but working with kids has hit me in a deeper way. There is something about guiding them through a concert and watching them feel proud that gives me a different kind of energy. It feels meaningful in a deeper way. It feels like we are shaping something that lasts.

Gary: What advice would you give to young teachers entering the field?

Bridget: Teach to the student. Connect first. Assess where they truly are and build from there. Find methods that work for you, but stay flexible. Keep it joyful. This generation needs music as connection and creativity, not just technical mastery. Let them experience joy in it.

Gary: And for parents considering an arts based education like Waldorf?

Bridget: Waldorf education nurtures the whole human. If your child needs space for socio-emotional growth, creative expression, and deep connection, it can be transformative. The academics are still rigorous, but the arts are not an afterthought. They are central. Call the school, attend an outreach event, and explore scholarship opportunities. There are many ways to get involved.

Ian Arras is part of a growing generation of musicians building careers through versatility, collaboration, and real world experience. A former student of The Lesson Studio and alum of the Rock and Pop Music Academy, Ian is now studying Recording Arts at University of Colorado Denver while actively performing, producing, and working as a session musician around the Front Range. In this Community Spotlight, Ian reconnects with Gary Gutierrez to reflect on college life, professional habits, and how early performance experience continues to shape his path as a working musician.

Q and A with Ian Arras

Gary Gutierrez: Ian, it has been a while since you were at The Lesson Studio. Catch us up. Where are you in school, and what are you studying now?

Ian Arras: I am at CU Denver studying Recording Arts, mostly production and recording. It is a smaller program, which I actually like because it gives me more flexibility to play music outside of school. I have met a lot of great people there, including my roommates, who are all musicians. We collaborate a lot, which has been really helpful.

Gary: Are there any collaborations that stand out right now?

Ian: My roommate Jason is a great producer, and I have been working with him a lot. I have also continued collaborating with Wrenn (Wrenn Van, TLS Alumna), which has been great. School really helped connect me with people I now work with regularly.

Gary: Outside of school, what does your musical life look like right now?

Ian: It goes in waves. I don’t love when my calendar is quieter, but I have been staying busy doing sideman gigs, subbing for other bands, and session work. I also have a personal project coming up. I am recording an album next month with a trio where I play organ. That project is very much my own, and I am excited about it.

Gary: Looking ahead a few years, how do you see your career shaping up?

Ian: Performing is what I enjoy the most. I like a mix of things, playing, recording, producing, but actually being on stage matters most to me. I think being a working musician is about doing a little bit of everything and doing it well.

Gary: As you move further into the professional world, what habits have you realized are essential?

Ian: The biggest thing is being a good hang. Most of the time you are not actually playing. You are spending time with people before and after gigs, during soundcheck, or in the studio. People want to work with musicians they enjoy being around. Preparation matters too. Know the tunes, show up on time, and take people’s time seriously. That goes a long way.

Gary: Thinking back on your time in the Rock and Pop Music Academy, what skills carried over into college and professional work?

Ian: Learning how a show actually works was huge. Soundcheck, load in, knowing when to play and when not to play, staying out of the way when needed. Those are things you do not always learn in a classroom. Playing shows through The Lesson Studio really prepared me for that.

Gary: You played some memorable venues with us. Any favorites?

Ian: The Fox Theater always stood out. That one felt really special.

Gary: We are actually returning to the Fox Theater this spring, which is exciting! To wrap up, what advice would you give to a younger version of yourself or to students just starting out?

Ian: Find music that excites you and follow that. I also wish I had developed a stronger practice routine earlier, especially for the things I did not want to work on but needed to. You have to balance discipline with passion. If you enjoy what you are playing, you will stick with it.

Gary: Before we finish, is there anything you would like us to promote?

Ian: Yes. I have a band called Big Ol’ Pig that I started with one of my roommates. It is a jam oriented project, and we have a show coming up on February 27 opening for Dave Watts. We also have some studio sessions up online.

For more than three decades, James Connell has supported the musical growth of students, families, and educators across Colorado. As the founder of Sol Vista Violins, James has built a trusted violin shop and orchestral rental program rooted in craftsmanship, accessibility, and long standing community relationships. From his early years as a performing guitarist to becoming a respected luthier and business owner, James has dedicated his career to helping young musicians succeed. In this Community Spotlight, he speaks with Gary Gutierrez, owner of The Lesson Studio, about his journey into the violin world, the growth of Sol Vista, and why quality instruments and community support matter.

Q and A with James Connell

Gary Gutierrez: James, many people know you today as a violin expert, but you actually started as a guitarist. How did that transition happen?

James Connell: I was studying music at Arizona State University and walked past a violin shop on my way to class every day. I kept stopping in to ask for work and was told no for months. Eventually the owner told me I could start the next day, which happened to be my twenty second birthday. I have been in the violin industry ever since.

Gary: That kind of persistence really defines you. How did that early experience shape your approach to business?

James: It showed me the importance of showing up consistently. That shop owner was deeply connected to his community, and that stayed with me. This work is not just about instruments. It is about supporting students and families at critical moments in their musical development.

Gary: I remember when both of us were building things from the ground up. How did Sol Vista Violins begin?

James: It started very grassroots. I drove all over the Front Range to meet teachers, deliver supplies, and build relationships one person at a time. That trust grew slowly. I wanted the business to be about community first. As for the name Sol Vista, I did not want to name the shop after myself. I wanted something that reflected where I live and allowed the business to grow beyond me.

Gary: Your instrument rental program has become a major resource for families. What sets it apart?

James: Quality. I invested heavily in well built instruments that could handle Colorado’s climate. Many rental programs focus on quick turnover, but that often comes at the expense of sound and durability. I wanted students to have instruments that inspire them to keep playing. Our rentals are privately labeled under Northland, and every detail from the woods to the strings is intentional.

Gary: You also offer full orchestral rentals, which is not always easy to find.

James: Yes. We rent violins, violas, cellos, and basses. Bass players often get overlooked because shops run out, so I made sure we had a strong bass inventory. If a student wants to play, I want them to have access.

Gary: You and The Lesson Studio have collaborated for years. How do you see that relationship benefiting students?

James: We share the same goal, helping kids grow through music. When studios and instrument shops work together, students are better supported. Repairs, rentals, and lessons all work together to strengthen school and private music programs.

Gary: Looking ahead, what is your vision for Sol Vista Violins?

James: We are continuing to grow thoughtfully. We have expanded to Denver at Von’s Violin Shop, added staff and luthiers, and brought on a road representative to support teachers. My wife is taking a larger role in the business, which helps us balance growth with quality of life. The focus remains the same, serve students and educators well and build something that lasts.

When young singers start noticing their voices cracking, feeling different, or suddenly dropping (or rising) in pitch, it can be confusing and sometimes discouraging. Parents often wonder whether it’s a good time to start singing lessons or if they should wait until things “settle.” The good news is that it’s not only safe for kids and teens to keep singing through these changes, but it can actually be one of the best things they do for their long-term vocal health.

At The Lesson Studio in Boulder, our voice teachers work with many students whose voices are transitioning. They help young singers stay confident, learn healthy technique, and enjoy music through every stage of growth.

Understanding the Changing Voice

What’s Actually Happening

During adolescence, a singer’s voice is adjusting to new physical growth. The vocal folds (or vocal cords) lengthen and thicken, and the larynx (voice box) grows larger. This process can affect pitch, tone, and control. For boys, this often means the voice becomes lower and richer over time. For girls, the change is typically subtler, with a slight deepening of tone and increased range or flexibility.

The process can feel unpredictable. One week, a student can sing a song easily; the next, that same note might crack or feel out of reach. It’s completely normal. Think of it as your instrument being rebuilt while you’re still learning to play it.

Signs You Might Notice

Parents and students usually notice signs like:

Cracking or sudden pitch breaks

Hoarseness or fatigue after singing

A voice that feels “scratchy” or inconsistent

Struggling to sing high or low notes that used to be easy

Emotionally, this can be frustrating. A young singer might feel embarrassed in choir or hesitate to perform. At The Lesson Studio, teachers remind students that these changes are temporary and that every professional singer has gone through them too.

What Voice Teachers Recommend During Voice Change

Keep Singing

One of the biggest misconceptions is that young singers should stop lessons until their voices “settle.” In reality, continuing to sing with the right guidance is beneficial. Stopping entirely can cause loss of coordination, and restarting later can make things more difficult.

Voice teachers help students adapt their exercises and song choices so that singing stays comfortable and healthy. A teacher might lower a song’s key, choose gentler warmups, or focus on breathing and relaxation.

A former student once shared that she nearly quit choir because her voice “didn’t sound right anymore.” After a few lessons focusing on breath control and gentle resonance work, she found that her voice felt stronger and smoother. She eventually went on to audition for a local musical with renewed confidence.

Warm Up Wisely

Adolescent singers should use simple, light exercises instead of trying to push their full range. Warmups that slide between pitches or use gentle humming are perfect for this stage. Lip trills, sirens, and relaxed scales help students stay connected to their natural tone without strain.

A good teacher at The Lesson Studio will remind young singers that consistency matters more than volume or power. A few focused minutes of healthy practice can do far more good than forcing big notes.

Choose Repertoire That Fits

It’s important to pick songs that sit comfortably in the student’s current range. That might mean transposing (changing the key) to make the song lower or higher. It also means avoiding songs that are too demanding or sit at the very top or bottom of the voice.

Our instructors often create custom playlists for students in transition. They include songs that are expressive but safe to sing, helping kids stay motivated while learning about their changing voice.

Prioritize Vocal Health

During this time, it’s easy to push too hard or overuse the voice, especially if a student is also involved in choir, theater, or sports that require shouting. Teachers encourage hydration, good posture, and vocal rest when needed.

One teacher at The Lesson Studio likes to compare it to sports training: if your body is growing and your muscles are adjusting, you wouldn’t run a marathon every day. You’d train smart, rest, and listen to your body. The same applies to singing.

How The Lesson Studio Supports Young Singers

Tailored Lessons for Every Student

Every voice is unique, and that’s especially true during adolescence. The Lesson Studio offers one-on-one lessons designed around each student’s stage of development. Teachers guide singers through exercises that support comfort, range, and expression without forcing their voices.

Experienced Instructors Who Specialize in Youth Voices

The studio’s instructors have extensive experience working with children and teens. They know how to keep lessons positive, flexible, and educational. Students are encouraged to explore their voice, experiment safely, and develop confidence through every stage of growth.

If you’re a parent looking for a supportive environment for your child, you can read more about the studio’s voice programs and faculty at The Lesson Studio.

Building Confidence and Self-Awareness

A key part of singing lessons is emotional support. Adolescents are dealing with more than just physical changes; they’re also building identity and self-esteem. Teachers at The Lesson Studio focus on celebrating small wins, helping students find joy in their progress, and reframing mistakes as part of learning.

One teacher recalls a student who came in shy and hesitant after his voice started dropping. Over the course of a few months, he learned to navigate his new range and even performed a song he wrote himself at a student recital. His voice might have been changing, but his confidence grew tenfold.

Open Communication with Parents

Parents often have questions about what’s normal during voice change. The Lesson Studio encourages open communication between parents, teachers, and students. Instructors will let parents know if a student needs extra rest, new music, or adjustments in lesson structure.

Tips for Parents and Students Before Starting Lessons

1. Ask About the Teacher’s Experience

When reaching out to book lessons, ask if the teacher has experience with changing voices. A knowledgeable teacher will know how to adapt lesson plans and keep students safe.

2. Start with a Trial Lesson

A trial lesson is a great way to see if the student feels comfortable and supported. It also gives the teacher a chance to evaluate the singer’s current range and make personalized recommendations.

3. Set Realistic Practice Goals

During this stage, short and consistent practice sessions are ideal. Ten to fifteen minutes of mindful singing is better than an hour of pushing through fatigue.

4. Expect Changes and Stay Flexible

The voice might sound different from week to week. This is completely normal. Encouraging flexibility and patience helps the singer focus on progress rather than perfection.

5. Encourage Self-Expression

Adolescence is a time for discovery. Encourage your child to explore different music styles or even write their own songs. Singing lessons are not just about technique; they’re about creativity and confidence.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it safe to take lessons while the voice is changing?
Yes. With proper guidance, singing lessons during adolescence help develop healthy habits that protect the voice long term.

Will singing cause more cracking or strain?
Cracking is normal during this phase. A teacher can show the student how to manage transitions smoothly and reduce strain.

What if my child’s range shrinks?
It’s temporary. As the body adjusts, the voice will often come back stronger and more resonant.

How long does the change last?
Every student is different, but most experience noticeable change for one to two years. Lessons during this time can make the transition smoother.

When should we start?
It’s never too early to start with healthy technique. You can contact The Lesson Studio to learn more or schedule a trial lesson today.

For nearly two decades, Jennifer Dunn has inspired hundreds of young musicians across the Boulder Valley School District. As the Band Director at Centennial Middle School, she has built a program that balances technical skill, creativity, and confidence – helping students discover their voices through music. From her own journey as a flute player in Alabama to leading performances at Denver Nuggets games, Jennifer has dedicated her career to making music accessible and meaningful for every student. In this Community Spotlight, she speaks with Gary Gutierrez, owner of The Lesson Studio, about her path in education, the realities of school music funding, and the importance of keeping young musicians engaged and inspired.

Q and A with Jennifer Dunn

Gary Gutierrez: Jennifer, thank you for joining us. Let’s start from the beginning. What first inspired you to pursue music

Jennifer Dunn: It actually started in elementary school. I was drawn to the recorder of all things, and then I had a neighbor who played the flute. I saw her play one day and immediately thought, “I want to do that.” When I was entering sixth grade, I was afraid I wouldn’t be able to play flute, so I almost didn’t sign up for band. My music teacher convinced me to give it a try, and the middle school director came over and tested me on mouthpieces. Flute worked, and that’s how it all began. I’m so glad my teachers pushed me, because they saw potential that I didn’t yet see in myself.

Gary: When did you realize that music education – not just performing – was what you wanted to do professionally?

Jennifer: That came later in high school. I was part of our marching band’s leadership team, and that experience showed me that I loved helping others grow. I already knew I was a good performer and a hard worker, but teaching and motivating others was something new. That leadership opportunity was the moment I realized I wanted to pursue music education. I eventually attended the University of Alabama, where I received scholarship support and earned my degree in Music Education.

Gary: After college, what did your teaching journey look like before you came to Boulder

Jennifer: I started teaching right out of college in Tuscaloosa at a high school, then taught middle school in Birmingham. After that, I worked in Jasper, Alabama, which was a smaller district that really valued its music programs. I loved it there – the administration was so supportive. When my family moved to Colorado in 2005, I joined the Boulder Valley School District and have been here ever since.

Gary: What are some of the unique rewards and challenges you’ve experienced teaching music in Boulder Valley

Jennifer: The rewards are huge. Our students come in well-prepared because their elementary teachers give them a strong foundation, especially in rhythm reading and basic music skills. It’s a joy to see that excitement carry into middle school. The biggest challenge is funding. There have been years when our entire budget was around seven hundred dollars. That’s tough when you need repairs, sheet music, and instruments. The district has improved in recent years with dedicated funds for sheet music and repairs, but I’d love to see more resources for instrument replacement so our students can continue learning on quality equipment.

Gary: What advice would you give to a young student who loves music and might be considering becoming a music teacher one day

Jennifer: Keep yourself challenged and seek out every opportunity. If you’re a motivated student, find ways to perform, mentor younger musicians, or audition for groups like the Greater Boulder Youth Orchestras or CU’s middle school outreach program. We also have a district honor band for our top students. And definitely take private lessons. They’re not just for students who are struggling – they’re for those who are excelling and ready for that next level.

Gary: That’s such an important message. At The Lesson Studio, we also encourage families to supplement school band with private lessons, especially since most directors can’t teach every instrument at an advanced level

Jennifer: Exactly. Even though I’m a band director, I can only teach flute and a few woodwinds at a high level. For brass or percussion, I always recommend specialized instruction. I tell parents that lessons aren’t about fixing mistakes – they’re about helping students grow beyond what we can do in a large ensemble setting.

Gary: What are some of the performance opportunities your students get to experience

Jennifer: One of our favorites is performing at a Denver Nuggets game each year. My orchestra colleague and I take the eighth graders to perform the National Anthem or a short set of pep rally music on the court before the game. It’s such a memorable experience – they get six minutes on the floor, right by the players warming up. Last year, one of my clarinetists got a high five from Jamal Murray and could not stop talking about it! We also do a middle-level festival with students from Centennial, Casey, and Platt Middle Schools, performing together under guest conductors. And our eighth graders take a spring trip to perform for judges at the Colorado West Music Invitational in Grand Junction.

Gary: Those are incredible opportunities. For parents or readers who want to support music education, what’s the best way to help?

Jennifer: Centennial Middle School has a memorial fund established in honor of Linda Welch, who taught here for many years before passing away from breast cancer. Her husband started the fund to support student opportunities. We use it to bring in guest clinicians, provide financial help for students in need, and host performances. It’s been such a meaningful resource for our program, and anyone can donate to it. I’ll be sharing the link so readers can learn more and contribute if they wish.

Gary: That’s wonderful. Before we wrap up, what’s one message you’d want to share with every young musician or parent reading this

Jennifer: Stick with it. Music is one of those things that’s easy to step away from, but hard to return to at the same level. If you take a year off, it’s not the same as playing with a community of musicians. So my advice to every student is simple – stay with it. The confidence, friendships, and experiences you gain through music are truly lifelong.

Gary Gutierrez: Trace, thanks for joining us. Let’s start with your origin story. You have such a unique playing style. What first drew you to the guitar?

Trace Bundy: It really happened by accident. My brother and I were walking around Buena Vista as kids and came across a guitar at a yard sale for 10 dollars. We each had 5 dollars in our pockets, so we bought it. We started learning with guitar magazines, mostly Metallica songs at first. My brother took the heavier route, and I leaned more acoustic. I also thought I had a pretty bad singing voice, so all my creativity went straight into the guitar. I loved thinking outside the box and coming up with new ways to express ideas through the instrument.

Gary: For someone hearing you play for the first time, it is clear your approach is not traditional. How would you describe the style of guitar you play?

Trace: The general term is fingerstyle guitar, but that is pretty broad. What I do includes tapping, percussion, looping, and using capos in unusual ways to make one guitar sound like multiple instruments at once. It is really about being creative and seeing how far I can stretch what the guitar can do.

Gary: Did you ever take lessons in this style, or were you mostly self taught?

Trace: No lessons. Completely self taught. I definitely missed out on things lessons would have helped with, but I also tried things only because I did not know any better, and that led to some of the techniques I use now. Early on, tabs were a huge resource for me. Every song I learned introduced a new technique. Over time, I got really into music theory, but I had to teach it to myself in my own way before I knew the official terms for anything.

Gary: Was there a moment that felt like a turning point in your creativity?

Trace: Yes. One day, I was sitting on my bed playing guitar and realized I was tapping out a melody with one hand. I thought, what if I hit a bass note with the other hand. It felt impossible at first, but I kept working on it and eventually wrote my first tapping piece (an early version of my song called “Dueling Ninjas“). I played it in a little coffee shop and the whole room stood up and applauded when I finished. That moment told me I was onto something.

Gary: You tour internationally, but our community knows you from your big annual show here in town. Tell us about your event at the Boulder Theater.

Trace: It is called Trace Bundy’s Acoustic Holiday, and this year is the 17th annual show. Throughout the year I am touring across the United States and internationally in places like China, Europe, and across Asia, but I save this show as the big hometown celebration to close out the year. It is not all holiday music, just a handful of seasonal songs mixed with originals and covers. I also bring in a special guest every year, usually someone who has inspired me or whose music I really love.

Gary: Can you share who this year’s special guest is?

Trace: Her name is Emma Harner. She is an amazing guitarist and vocalist who has been getting a lot of attention online. When I first listened, I immediately thought, this is something special. I am excited for people to hear her.

Gary: Our team here at The Lesson Studio has had the joy of working with your kids in both lessons and Rock and Pop Music Academy. What drew your family to TLS?

Trace: We have loved it. The best part is giving kids the chance to be on stage with lights, a great sound setup, bandmates, and learning how to perform as a group. It teaches confidence, leadership, listening, and teamwork. Your teachers do such a great job identifying each kid’s strengths and bringing those forward so no one gets lost in the background. It is a really special
experience.

Gary: Before we wrap, is there anything else you would like our community to know?

Trace: Just that we are grateful. Music is not only about learning an instrument. It is about growing as a person. TLS has really supported that for our kids, and we appreciate it.
